LAUREL, MD. 03-22-08---Goldfarb, Dubb & Cast Of Characters’ Double Or Nothing out-stepped a competitive band of 3-year-olds to win the $80,000 Private Terms Stakes at Laurel Park.
A shipper from the New York stable of Richard Dutrow Jr., Double Or Nothing raced three wide to the turn, then spurted to the lead at the head of the lane and finished the one mile distance in 1:38.66 while racing down the middle of the track. Under jockey Abel Castellano, he crossed the finish line a half-length ahead of 50-1 long shot Regal Solo. Vanderkaay came flying late to nip post time favorite Cave’s Valley in the very last jump for third.
Double Or Nothing had been racing against starter/allowance company at Aqueduct. Dutrow claimed the son of Double Honor at Saratoga last summer and, previous to this start, the dark bay gelding rewarded his trainer with four seconds and one victory. This was his first stakes win.
Double Or Nothing paid $10.20. The 10-9 exacta returned $346.20 and the triple paid $3,045.80.
“When I went to the paddock, wow, I was really surprised because I had never ridden this horse before but here was a nice, big three-year-old,” said Castellano. “He broke a little sharp and relaxed pretty comfortable down the backside and when I asked him a little bit on the turn he took off.”
New York shippers have won eight of the 14 stakes races conducted during the Laurel Park winter meeting.
