LAUREL, MD. 03-29-08---Germania Farms’ Gattopardo put in a splendid five-furlong work at Laurel Park Saturday morning in preparation for next Saturday’s Grade III Bay Shore Stakes for three-year-olds at Aqueduct. The son of Johannesburg stopped the timer in 58 seconds for five-furlongs with jockey Julian Pimentel, the fastest of 14 works at the central Maryland track. The Tim Tullock trainee galloped out at 1:10 and change.
“It was a pretty impressive move,” Tullock said. “He did it well within himself. We might have the premier seven-eighths of a mile three-year-old in the country.”
After winning the Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel four weeks ago, Tullock indicated the ultimate goal for his star is the $1 million Preakness Stakes (Grade I), the middle jewel of racing’s vaunted Triple Crown, at Pimlico Race Course on May 17.
“We’ll have to see how he runs next Saturday, but if he runs well the Preakness would be under serious consideration,” added Tullock.
Gattopardo has been first or second in all six career starts.
