LAUREL, MD. 10-04-08---A crowd of better than sixty owners, friends and fans greeted Country Life Farm’s Spectacular Malibu in the winners’ circle after she earned her second Maryland Million day victory, this time in $150,000 Maryland Million Distaff.

The 4-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon won the 2006 Maryland Million Lassie as a 2-year-old. She did not race last year. This year, under trainer Mike Trombetta, Spectacular Malibu has won three of ten starts and finished second in both the Geisha at Pimlico and the Windward at Presque Isle Downs.

Julian Pimentel rode the grey-roan filly over the seven furlong distance in 1:23.56. She finished 2-1/2 lengths the better of front runner All Giving. Jet Away Jane was third.

Trombetta said, “This was a great group of horses, all stakes winners. She probably ran one of her lifetime best. I expected La Chica Rica to go out there and I asked Julian not to fall too far out of it. I don’t think you want to be too far out on a day like this. Spectacular Malibu missed 2007 with a small ankle chip but now she’s paying us back.”

Pimentel said, “Mike told me to just let her break. I just let her get into the race. She was relaxed all the way down the backside. I moved her out going around the turn and when I asked her to move on she responded and just drew off.”

Jonathan Joyce (All Giving) said, “She did everything right. I knew they were going to be coming at us sooner or later going for this money. She relaxed early on the lead and left it all on the track late. She just got outrun. It was a great opportunity.”

Spectacular Malibu was the last horse bred by the late Charlie Hadry, a leading horseman in Maryland for many years.
