LAUREL, MD. 10-04-08---Robert & Linda Newton’s Miss Lombardi found a seam between nine rivals, dove through the hole and galloped to victory in the $200,000 Maryland Million Ladies.
Jeremy Rose guided the 6-year-old daughter of Unbridled Jet to victory in 1:49.52 over the firm turf. Debbie Sue, the 2006 winner, also came out of the pack to take a share of the purse, ¾ of a length behind the winner. Longshot Beau’s Tip, who led from the start, held on to finish third.
Miss Lombardi paid $9.60. Trained by Graham Motion at the Fair Hill training center, the winner was bred by her owners in Maryland. They own her dam, Chemise.
Adrian Rolls, assistant to trainer Motion said, “She’s trained very well since her last run six weeks ago. She likes this turf. It’s a little soft today. I told Jeremy to keep her relaxed and let her go when it was time. He told me she took a good tug of him.”
Motion now has seven victories on Maryland Million Day, moving into a third place tie with King Leatherbury, Tony Dutrow and Tim Ritchey, one behind co-leaders Bill Boniface and Dale Capuano.
Rose said, “The hardest thing for me was to get her to relax. I spoke with Graham in the morning and asked him if he wanted me to get her out of there quick and take her to the rail. He said just get her to relax. That’s what I did and she responded.”
Rose is fourth all-time among Maryland Million riders with 10 victories.
“She ran huge today,” said Malcolm Franklin, who was aboard Debbie Sue. “I moved her into position going into the far turn and had my eye on the winner. I asked my mare to move and she really responded. I thought for a minute I was going to get there but that other horse just dug in. My mare ran great.”
Defending champion Maddy’s Heart finished sixth.
