LAUREL, MD. 10-04-08---Miss Charm City, owned by the estate of James Glenn, won one for the home team with a gate-to-wire victory in the $150,000 Maryland Million Lassie.
Bred in Maryland by her late owner and trained by Carlos Garcia at Laurel Park, Miss Charm City sped to the lead in the seven furlong test for 2-year-old fillies and stayed on cruise control for jockey Horacio Karamanos until she crossed under the finish line in 1:24.81, 1-1/4 lengths ahead of Fools In Love. Blind Date finished third.
Miss Charm City ($10.40) remains undefeated with the victory. She won her maiden race at Laurel in August and returned to capture the Gin Talking Stakes less than a month later. The filly is a daughter of Bowman’s Band.
Karamanos said, “She broke very sharp. I had her in hand the whole way. She was running fast but doing it easy. At the top of the stretch I just tapped her on the shoulder with my whip and she exploded. When we crossed the finish line she was just galloping. Mr. Garcia did a great job with her. She gets better every race. I think she can be even a better horse.”
This was the second win on the afternoon for Karamanos, who took the Turf with Broadway Producer.
Garcia said, “She can run. We never push her too hard. She’s improving every race. The owner died three or four months ago and we don’t have any plans for her. She can go a mile if she has to. She never gets tired. I like to win on Maryland Million day. It’s good for us and it’s good for the state and the fans. There’s a lot of excitement and hopefully we get slots and we can do this every Saturday.”
It was the 132nd stakes victory for Garcia, including four on “Maryland’s day at the Races”.
Stewart Elliott (Fools In Love) said, “We looked at the race and it looked like everyone would go for the lead. She likes to lay off of it and we thought it would really set up for us. Turns out nobody went for it. We ran a good race. It’s just the winner got away from all of us early, but that’s racing.”
