10-23-13---I sat down on my couch Saturday night. Maryland Million was over. Nine interviews were finished. Eleven horses, trainers, jockeys and owners had won. The stress had begun to dissipate. 10-10-13---Maryland Horsemen's Assistance Fund’s (MHAF) Executive Director Bobby Lillis set out to create a fundraiser for backstretch workers. The initial plan was to raise money for workers who needed financial help for medical bills, mortgage, food, and the general costs of living. That plan took on a new meaning the morning of September 19 when exercise rider Jose Villegas suffered a permanently debilitating injury after a spill while galloping a two-year-old colt at Laurel Park. read more

09-05-13---I sat down in a chair in my new office at Laurel Park Wednesday afternoon, looked around for a little while and tried to take it all in. New laptop, old desk. A fresh pad of paper, dried out highlighters. My iPad on the corner of the desk, Frank Carulli’s old metal hangers on a shelf to my left. Bare walls stripped of whatever posters or pictures hung on them before me. The leftover tape and nails suggest there were quite a few. read more
