Graded Winners Among 80 Nominations for Saturday, Jan. 12
Four Stakes Worth $400,000 in Purses Open 2019 Stakes Schedule
 
LAUREL, MD – Late Night Pow Wow, riding a seven-race win streak, and fellow graded-stakes winner Ms Locust Point top 15 horses nominated to the $100,000 What a Summer Stakes Saturday, Jan. 12 at Laurel Park.
 
The six-furlong What a Summer for fillies and mares is one of four $100,000 stakes for 4-year-olds and up that attracted a total of 80 nominations and kick off the 2019 Maryland stakes schedule.
 
Also scheduled are the Nellie Morse for females and Native Dancer at about 1 1/16 miles and the six-furlong Fire Plug. They are the first of 15 stakes worth $1.75 million in purses at Laurel’s winter meet, which opened Jan. 1 and runs through March 31.
 
Breeze Easy’s Late Night Pow Wow extended her win streak in the six-furlong Willa On the Move Nov. 24 at Laurel, the 4-year-old West Virginia-bred filly’s first race outside of her home state, where she won the Charles Town Oaks (G3) Sept. 22.
 
Cash is King and Jim Reichenberg’s Ms Locust Point opened her 5-year-old season with an easy three-length allowance win Jan. 1, her first start since finishing second to Late Night Pow Wow in the Willa On the Move. It was the first loss in five tries at Laurel for the Dialed In mare, winner of the Barbara Fritchie (G2) in 2018.
 
Also among the nominees multiple stakes winner My Magician, a late-running second in the six-furlong Politely Stakes Dec. 29 at Laurel, and stakes winners Devine Mischief, Silver Bay and Sower.
 
Grade 3-placed Sower is one of 17 nominees to the Nellie Morse along with Linda Rice-trained multiple stakes-winning stablemate Midnight Disguise, unraced since May 28; Isotope, winner of the one-mile Thirty Eight Go Go Stakes Dec. 29 at Laurel; multiple stakes winner T Rex Express and Timeless Curls, a winner of three straight for trainer Dale Capuano.
 
Dennis Drazin’s Sunny Ridge, whose five career stakes wins include the 2016 Withers (G3), is prominent among 26 nominees to the Native Dancer. Trained by Jason Servis, the 6-year-old Holy Bull gelding ran third by less than two lengths in the Cigar Mile (G1) Dec. 1 at Aqueduct in his most recent start.
 
Multiple stakes winners River Deep and Sonny Inspired, both trained by Phil Schoenthal; 2017 Iselin (G3) winner Just Call Kenny; Runnin’toluvya, a four-time stakes winner on a six-race win streak; and 2017 Maryland Million Classic winner Bonus Points are also nominated.
 
Runnin’toluvya and Sonny Inspired are also among 22 horses nominated to the Fire Plug, along with Colonel Sharp and Cautious Giant, first and fourth, respectively, in the Dave’s Friend Stakes Dec. 29 at Laurel; and multiple stakes winner Heartwood and Welder, the latter owning 15 victories from 23 career starts and a winner of his last four at Remington Park.
