Laurel Park's Fundraiser for Fray Raises $10,000

LAUREL, MD - Fundraiser for Fray, a benefit held to raise awareness and funds for jockey Fray Martinez and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Maryland, raised nearly $10,000 Saturday during Laurel Park's Winter Carnival.

Laurel's silent auction, which included horse racing and sports memorabilia, raised more than $9,000. The auction included signed items by the country's top jockeys, trainers King Leatherbury and Todd Pletcher, gift bags from the Baltimore Orioles, Sagamore and Herringswell stables, and tickets to the Preakness, Florida Derby and Santa Anita Derby.

Another $1,000 was raised through donations and a raffle and a $10,000 anonymous donation was made to Martinez directly by a reader of The Racing Biz.

Martinez, 21, was diagnosed in December with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He is receiving treatment in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Fray and his wife, Yelitza, are expecting their first child this spring.

Fundraiser for Fray also included a bone marrow registry and a visit from Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford.
