Outbacker Wins Maryland Million Starter Handicap In A Photo

LAUREL, MD. 10-18-14---Larry R. Reed claimed Outbacker for $12,500 in February and saw him blossom into a stakes winner today as his charge took the $50,000 Maryland Million Starter Handicap at Laurel Park in a driving finish.

Alex Cintron picked up the mount on the son of Outflanker this morning and gave him a picture perfect ride, stalking the leaders from mid-pack and then ranging up in mid-stretch to catch The Camden Comet, who appeared to be on his way to victory in the one-mile test. They won by a head in 1:37.26.

“I didn’t have a quick break so it was important to get him comfortable to have a good trip,” Cintron said. “The twelve (The Camden Comet) tried to get away turning for home but my horse responded well when I went to the left hand. He got confused and gave up a little after first wire but took off again when the other horse started coming at him to the second finish line.”

Reed not only trains Outbacker but is his trainer. Outbacker paid $6.80.
