Rainbow 6 Carryover Grows to $42,563 for Friday, March 9

LAUREL, MD - Jorge Vargas Jr. rode three straight winners late in Monday’s card to punctuate a four-win afternoon for the current winter-spring meet’s leading jockey.

Vargas picked up his first winner with Belfour ($3.20) in the second race and followed up with Mila Jane ($10.80) in the sixth, first-time starter Three Hawk ($7) in the seventh and Kaitain ($4.40) in the eighth.

Vargas leads apprentice Weston Hamilton atop the jockey standings, 32-19, and is also the leading rider in purses earned with more than $1 million. The winter-spring meet runs through Saturday, March 31.

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved during a rescheduled Monday program at Laurel Park, growing the jackpot carryover to $42,563.90 for the return of live racing Friday, March 9.

A total of $35,497 was bet into the popular multi-race wager Monday, adding to a carryover of $31,205 from Sunday’s program. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $286.06.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 60 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Friday’s Rainbow 6 spans Races 4-9 and includes the day’s feature, a $42,000 entry-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles in Race 7. First race post time is 12:30 p.m.

Severe weather conditions from Winter Storm Riley forced Maryland Jockey Club officials to move the nine-race program originally carded for Friday, March 2 to Monday.

Notes: Jockey Ricardo Chiappe had two winners Monday, aboard Dutch Blitz ($4.20) in the first race and Stay West ($6) in the fifth. Trainer Mike Trombetta saddled back-to-back winners with Truly Hot ($11.20) in the third and Springtime Wind ($3.40) in the fourth.
