80-1 Shot Lights Up The Tote Board In Friday's Third Race

LAUREL, MD. 12-05-14---Standing Point raced wide the whole way and was bothered as he battled his way down the stretch but none of that made any difference as the Point Given offspring posted an 80-1 surprise in Friday’s third race at Laurel Park.

Making his second start at Laurel for trainer Pat Vassallo, Sr. after racing at Suffolk Downs this summer, Standing Point carried Christian Santiago Reyes to a 2-1/4 length victory in 1:13.26 for the 6-furlong distance. C V Outlaw, who bumped the winner, nipped Hero’s Notion for second.

The 4-year-old paid $162.20 and topped a $769.20 exacta, a $1,097.80 trifecta and a $2,273.30 superfecta.

 

TROMBETTA BARN HEATING UP

After winning just one race from 34 starters at Laurel Park in November, trainer Mike Trombetta scored for the third consecutive day in December when Glich ($5) took this afternoon’s fourth race.

The 48-year-old is one of four conditioners vying for the top spot in the fall standings. Claudio Gonzalez leads with 23 winners, two more than Jamie Ness. Trombetta and Hamilton Smith are tied for third with 20 visits to the winners’ circle.

There are 12 live racing days remaining in the calendar year.
