Maryland-based Runners Make Mark on Belmont Weekend

Maryland-based horses traveling to New York for Belmont Weekend made their presence felt.

On Saturday, Ascend, winner of the Henry Clark at Laurel April 22, went gate-to-wire at odds of 27-1 to win the $1 million Manhattan (G1). Owned by Stone Farm and Madaket Stable and trained at Fair Hill by Graham Motion, Ascend returned $57 in the 1 ¼ mile turf event. Motion also saddled Irish War Cry, who broke his maiden at Laurel and won last year’s Marylander, to a second-place finish in the Belmont Stakes (G1).

On Friday, Lael Stables’ Hawksmoor, stabled at Fair Hill with trainer Arnaud Delacour, won the New York Stakes (G2) on a firm 1 ¼ course.

In the $100,000 Tremont, He Hate Me, owned by Sagamore Farm and based at Laurel, remained undefeated by impressively winning the 5 ½ furlong event by 3 ¼ lengths. The colt, who broke his maiden at Pimlico May 26, is now undefeated in three starts for trainer Horacio DePaz.
