Rainbow 6 Carryover Swells to $214,705 for Friday, April 6

Curlin Gelding Cordmaker Impresses In Sophomore Debut

LAUREL, MD – There will be a jackpot carryover of $214,705.26 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 when live racing returns to Laurel Park with a nine-race program Friday, April 6.

One horse, 35-1 long shot Hard Drive, was live to take down the jackpot heading into Monday’s ninth-race finale, won by Smart Russian ($20.20). A total of $104,741 was bet into the popular multi-race wager, adding to a carryover of $181,211.96 from Saturday, March 31.

Multiple tickets were sold with all six winners Monday, each worth $25,119.96.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 60 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 40 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Friday’s Rainbow 6 covers Races 4-9 and includes a $42,000 entry-level allowance for 3-year-olds and up going 5 ½ furlongs in Race 6 and a $45,000 second-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up at seven furlongs in Race 8.

Curlin Gelding Cordmaker Impresses in Sophomore Debut

Hillwood Stable’s Cordmaker, a Maryland-bred son of Hall of Famer Curlin, returned from a nearly four-month layoff to post an impressive comeback victory in Monday’s featured eighth race.

Ridden by Steve ‘Cowboy’ Hamilton for trainer Rodney Jenkins, Cordmaker ($11.20) swept past his rivals with a powerful move in the stretch and pulled clear to win the $42,000 entry-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds in 1:37.63 for one mile over a fast main track.

It was the first start for Cordmaker since getting the winter off after finishing fifth in the Maryland Juvenile Futurity Dec. 9 at Laurel behind multiple stakes winners Whirlin Curlin and Still Having Fun and Maryland Million Nursery winner Clever Mind.

“He acted like a grownup today,” Hillwood’s Ellen Charles said. “He was a different horse in the paddock today than he has been, and he’s always been a nice horse.”

Cash  Exchange was quickest from the gate and led through an opening quarter-mile in 24.89 seconds with Nico Bree N Teej in behind and Cordmaker settled on the inside from his rail post. Cordmaker eagerly pulled Hamilton into a contending position after a half in 48.25, and those three turned for home in front until Hamilton swung Cordmaker to the outside where they powered down the center of the track to take the lead past the eighth pole and open up by 5 ½ lengths at the wire.

“We were high on him. He had had a couple [bullet] works but I didn’t know if going a flat mile today was the right thing,” Jenkins said. “The race came up tougher than I thought. But, he’s been training good, and Stevie rode him beautiful.”

Jenkins did not rule out bringing Cordmaker back in the $125,000 Federico Tesio for 3-year-olds going 1 1/8 miles April 21 at Laurel. The Tesio is a ‘Win and You’re In’ race for the Preakness Stakes (G1) May 19, though Cordmaker is not Triple Crown-nominated.

“We’ll talk about it. We’ll see how he comes back,” Jenkins said. “He ran beautiful today, we’ll see. I think he’ll be a good two-turn horse.”

Notes: Three jockeys enjoyed two-win days Monday. Edwin Gonzalez captured the opener with Paluxy Princess ($5) and the nightcap with Smart Russian ($20.20), Steve Hamilton was first on Cairenn ($3.40) in the second race and Cordmaker ($11.20) in the eighth, and Luis Garcia scored aboard Southern Barbecue ($10.20) in the third and Takedown ($8.20) in the fifth. Takedown and Gotham News ($14.20) in the seventh are both trained by Lacey Gaudet.
