Leading Rider McCarthy Takes Off Friday Mounts, Will Return Saturday

LAUREL, MD – There will be carryovers in the 20-cent Rainbow 6, 50-cent Late Pick 5 and $1 Super Hi-5 during Laurel Park’s 11-race program Saturday.

First race post time is 12:30 p.m.

No one had all six winners in the Rainbow 6, growing the carryover jackpot to $3,849.09 for Saturday’s sequence which covers Races 6-11. Tickets with four of six winners Friday returned $24.66.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 60 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 40 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

A carryover of $4,720.11 will be available in the Late Pick 5, which spans Races 7-11. Tickets with four of five winners Friday were worth $121.

Saturday’s opener, a one-mile claiming event for fillies and mares 3 and up, features a Super Hi-5 carryover of $2,207.17.

A total of 138 horses were entered for Saturday’s 11 races, averaging 12.5 starters per race. Grass races drew a total of 90 horses for six races, an average of 15 per race, with three races apiece scheduled over the Fort Marcy and Kelso Turf Course layouts.

Saturday’s feature comes in Race 10, a $47,000 optional claiming allowance at 1 1/16 miles on the Fort Marcy that attracted Grade 1 winner Chiropractor; Top of Mind, most recently second in the Commonwealth Turf Cup (G2) Sept. 24; and English Minister, second by a neck in the Find Stakes in June.

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 also includes a $42,000 entry-level allowance for fillies and mares 3 and older on the Fort Marcy in Race 7 and a $45,000 second-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up on the Kelso, both at 5 ½ furlongs.

On Sunday, 150 horses were entered for the 11-race program, for an average of 13.6 per race. Turf racing attracted a total of 93 horses for six races, averaging 15.5 per race, with three apiece scheduled over the Fort Marcy and Kelso layouts.

Leading Rider McCarthy Takes Off Friday Mounts, Will Return Saturday

Trevor McCarthy, the leading rider in Maryland this year, will be back in action Saturday at Laurel after taking off all his Friday mounts following a spill during Thursday’s sixth race at Keeneland.

McCarthy was sore but escaped injury when his horse, Gervais, broke in the air and then clipped heels on the first turn of the 2-year-old maiden special weight event. It was the fifth race over two days for McCarthy at the Lexington, Ky. track, a trip that included his first win with Graham Motion-trained Party Boat on Wednesday.

“That’s how crazy this game is. You’re on such a high one day after winning a race and the next day you’re on the ground. It’s a roller-coaster ride,” McCarthy’s agent, Scott Silver, said. “He’s going to be back [Saturday]. We just gave him a day to recover. He hit the ground pretty hard and we just wanted give him the day off. He’s been doing a lot of traveling and a day wasn’t going to hurt him.”

McCarthy’s 137 wins are the most by any rider in Maryland this year. He captured Laurel’s winter-spring and Pimlico’s Preakness meet titles.
