Intrepid Mo Dusts Them in Friday Feature

Hazlewood’s winning streak continues

LAUREL, MD— Intrepid Mo ran to her heavy backing when rolling to a five-length victory in Friday’s featured seventh race at Laurel Park, a $49,000 first-level allowance for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles.

On a cold, raw day punctuated by snow flurries, Intrepid Mo never looked like a loser.

Ridden by the meet’s leading rider, teenage apprentice jockey Yedsit Hazlewood, Intrepid Mo perched just off pacesetter How Sweet She Is through moderate fractions of 24.17 and 49.24 seconds.

From there, it was only a question of margin.

Intrepid Mo pulled Hazlewood to the lead after six furlongs in 1:15.39, and strutted home under confident handling. Audibly rallied from last to be second, 4 ¾ lengths ahead of Arise My Love. Paradise Wins, How Sweet She Is, By the Glass, Isle Blue, and Sharmin completed the order of finish. Dazzy scratched.

Intrepid Mo returned $2.80 to win after stepping the distance in 1:49 flat over the good main track.

Hazlewood, 17, has ridden at least one winner on each of the last 17 racing dates at Laurel Park.

Bred in Kentucky by Brandywine Farm, Intrepid Mo was listed as a $17,000 buyback as a yearling. A 3-year-old filly by Outwork, she is a half-sister to Grade 3-placed synthetic sprinter Imagery. Her third dam, Thunder Bertie, was a Grade 3 winner at two.

Owned by Larry Fowler, Intrepid Mo is trained by Gary Capuano.

Unraced at two, Intrepid Mo didn’t make her debut until May 30, finishing in a dead-heat for third in a maiden special weight at Delaware. A second-out winner racing six furlongs at Delaware, Intrepid Mo captured a $40,000 conditioned claimer racing seven-eighths at Laurel on Oct. 3, then finished second in a first-level allowance last month.

“She’s turned out pretty good,” Capuano said. “She’s come a long way. As a baby, we had to nurse her along pretty slow, and give her a lot of time, but it’s paid off.”

Intrepid Mo boasts three wins from seven starts, earning $ 93,044.
