Cairo Surprise Returns Running in Saturday Feature

Cruz, Hazlewood each win two races

LAUREL, MD—It could be argued that Cairo Surprise beat himself in his final start of 2025, the South Mountain Stakes on November 26 at Penn National.

That evening, Cairo Surprise shrugged off a pace rival, emerged with a stretch lead, then ducked out under Angel Cruz’s left-handed urging. That brief lapse in concentration cost Cairo Surprise dearly, as he was overtaken on the inside by favored winner Tough Guy Tony.

LAUREL, MD—Dwelling Legacy immediately grabbed an early advantage under leading rider Yedsit Hazlewood and took two foes every step of the way in Friday’s featured second race at Laurel Park, a $56,000 allowance for fillies and mares over 5 ½ furlongs.

Sent away the odds-on favorite over the sealed, sloppy track, Dwelling Legacy was simply sharper from the starting stalls than her main rival, Conquerthosewecan, and cleared to the lead and the rail.

J.G. Torrealba rides three winners

LAUREL, MD—As jockey Angel Cruz guided Top Manipulator to the winner’s circle after a gutsy victory in Friday’s co-featured fourth race at Laurel Park, the gelding looked as if he had just gone ten rounds with a prime Mike Tyson.

Flanks heaving and snorting heavily, Top Manipulator posed for track photographer Jim McCue, then trudged back to the barn for a well-deserved bath.
