Laurel Cancels Final Three Races Saturday Due to Weather
8-Race Card Scheduled for Fall Meet Finale Sunday, Dec. 31
LAUREL, MD – Deteriorating winter weather conditions forced the cancellation of the final three races on Saturday’s Christmastide Stakes Day program Saturday at Laurel Park.
Management made the decision to cancel prior to the eighth race, the $100,000 Thirty Eight Go Go, the fifth of six scheduled stakes races worth $550,000 in purses.
Both the Thirty Eight Go Go for fillies and mares 3 and older and the $100,000 Dave’s Friend for 3-year-olds and up will be brought back Friday, Jan. 5. Entries will be taken Sunday, Dec. 31.
“As the day went on, conditions deteriorated and we felt it was in the best interests of everyone to cancel the remainder of the races,” Maryland Jockey Club President Sal Sinatra said.
In Saturday’s earlier stakes action, Diamond King won the Heft and Strategic Dreams captured the Gin Talking for 2-year-olds; John Jones defended his title in the Jennings and My Magician was a narrow winner of the Politely, each for Maryland-bred/sired horses.
Laurel’s 62-day fall meet is scheduled to wrap up with an eight-race program Sunday, Dec. 31. The 2018 winter-spring meet is set to kick off Monday, Jan. 1.
