Max Capacity Sharp at Laurel Park
LAUREL, MD— Max Capacity rushed up soon after the start under jockey Jevian Toledo, controlled fractions of 22.62 and 46.45 seconds, then stayed strong to win Sunday’s sixth race at Laurel Park, a $49,000 first-level allowance with a $62,500 claiming option for 2-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs.
Trained by Richard Sillaman for Harbordale Stable, LBR Racing Stable, and Michael Schmidt, Max Capacity stopped the timer in 1:04.82 over the fast track, and returned $24.20 as the longest shot on the tote board. Blue Forty Two rallied wide for second, 1 ½ lengths behind the winner. Mr. Supreme finished another 1 ½ lengths behind in third. Worker Bee, favored Hell Ofa Hillbilly, Irish Jubalee, and Bonsai Warrior completed the order of finish. Flyin Hawaiian, Mose Smokin, Our Day Will Come, and Hollywood Import withdrew earlier in the morning. Spidey Man scratched during the warmup.
“We thought there was more speed in the race, and we were going to try to sit off of it, but nobody really went,” Sillaman said. “I thought [Hell Ofa Hillbilly] would go to the front. That’s on [Toledo]. He rode a smart race.”
The win was Toledo’s second in the card after he wired the field with favored Daufuskie Island in the second race.
Bred in Kentucky by Ocala Stud, Max Capacity is by Maxfield out of an unraced half-sister to multiple Grade 2 winner Unlimited Budget, Grade 3 winners Jardin and Beacon Flash, and stakes-placed Conquest See Ya. His second dam, the stakes-placed Unlimited Pleasure, is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Outofthebox.
Sillaman purchased Max Capacity for $38,000 at OBS in April.
“The production line on the mare sire is unbelievable,” Sillaman said. “Just perfect. I buy a lot of [progeny] by first-crop sires. I try to get lucky that way.”
Max Capacity showed speed and ability right off the bat, wiring a restricted optional maiden claiming group at Colonial by four lengths on July 11.
“He’s always trained like a nice horse,” Sillaman said.
Sillaman entered Max Capacity in the Fasig-Tipton July Digital Sale, but the colt failed to meet his reserve and was bought back for $210,000.
Max Capacity made his first start against winners in Delaware’s Dover Stakes on Aug. 14. After showing good speed, he tired and finished fifth of six.
“I don’t think he liked that track,” Sillaman maintained. “It was a little deeper than he’s used to.”
Sillaman experimented with a surface switch for Max Capacity’s third start, the Fitz Dixon Memorial Juvenile Stakes over the Tapeta surface at Presque Isle Downs on Sept. 19. After a wide trip, Max Capacity finished sixth.
“He got green there, and didn’t really like that too much,” Sillaman said.
Sillaman believes Max Capacity can continue to improve.
“I knew he had the talent,” he said. “He just had to put it all together. He needs time to mature, and I think he’s going to go long. I guess we’ve got to try a stake now. Either here, or in Tampa.”
